Process Design

Process Design
Integrated design approach: From thermodynamics to supply chains.

In our process design group, we build the bridge between thermodynamic properties, processes, and supply chains. We develop methods for conceptual process design aiming for sustainable energy and chemical processes. For this purpose, we combine efficient shortcut models for material screenings and automated process flowsheeting with rigorous process modeling. A sound thermodynamic basis is ensured by linking predictive thermodynamic property models with experimental data.

Our technology scope ranges from separation processes, like extraction, distillation, absorption, and adsorption, to energy transformation, using e.g. heat pumps, Rankine cycles, and electrochemical systems. We apply our multi-scale expertise in process modeling, equipment sizing, techno-economic analysis, and life cycle assessment to develop sustainable supply chains for polymer recycling, carbon capture, bio-based chemicals and fuels, and new carbon capture and utilization routes.
